Herman's Norwegian name was Hermund Gunnarson Arnegard. He married Anna Olsdatter Torkelsgard in 1855. The last word of these names are the names of the farms they lived on in Norway. In 1870 they sold the Arnegard farm (near Geilo) and came to America, where they adopted the names Herman and Anne Gunderson. Their first four children were born in Norway, and at least three in Minnesota.
They first settled in St. Peter, but in June, 1877 they and some other families left Sibley and Nicollet Counties, looking for free land farther north. A caravan was assembled, with ten covered wagons drawn by horses and oxen, followed by herds of cattle and sheep. After about three weeks they came to what is now Strand Township, originally named Herman Township, in what was then still Polk County. The Herman Gunderson family together with the Carl Benson family became the first settlers there, on June 25, 1877.
