James was the son of Revolutionary War veteran James Larkins & Catherine Gerlinger.

He married Mary ("Polly") Tudor on 1 Mar 1804 in Rockbridge Co., VA. Not long after their marriage, they moved to Fayette Co., OH.

Their children included: Sarah (Binegar); Nancy (Draper); Catherine (Henderson); James; John W.; Elizabeth (Tracey, Juett); Mary (Sprinkle); Joshua; William; Samuel; & Lavina (Hughey).

After Polly's death, James moved with family to Warren Co., IL.
