Alice was born April 20, 1866 in Mendota Township, near Unionville, Missouri, the daughter of Jane (Bailey) (Paulk) Foote and Pvt. Charles William Foote, (Civil War veteran - 86th IL Co. A).

Alice had an older half-brother, Dan Cyrus Paulk born in 1858. Her older sister Belle was born in 1862, two months before their father enlisted in the Civil War. Alice was born nine months after their father's return from the Civil War. Their youngest sister Rose came along in 1869.

When Alice was 18, Elva Dan Foote became her firstborn. It was decided between her and her parents that since she was unmarried, that her parents would raise Elva as their own.

Shortly thereafter, Alice married her first husband, John Nelson Hyatt. Her sister Rose married his older brother James B. Hyatt.

Alice and John's son, Nelson "Nels" John Hyatt was born 11 months after Elva. It was rumored that John Hyatt was poisoned in Minnesota, sometime before 1900.

Alice had at least three husbands, John Nelson Hyatt, Mr. Gregory and James Sidaway

Alice lived in Missouri, Kansas, and Minnesota. Her final years were spent in Brainerd, MN near her son Nels and his many children. Alice died of a stroke in 1934, after which Nels' family relocated to Washington State where they remained.

Elva raised his family in South Dakota and may have never known that Alice was his birthmother. His children certainly didn't know, until his birth record was discovered in Putnam County Courthouse in 2002.
