Joseph was known as Joel was the s/o Joel and Jane P Wilson Smith. On 22 Nov 1877 he married Susan Ann Lancaster in Obion City, Obion Co, Tennessee. She was the d/o of Henry and Sarah Ann Coleman Lancaster and was born in 1853 and died 5 Sep 1923 in La Center, Kentucky. Together, they had 4 children:
1.Eunity/Unity/Charity 1879-?
2.Ora Ann 1882-1966
3.Joel Lancaster 1887-1975, and
4.Martile Ivy 1889-1916

Joel was a farmer by trade but after 1910 he became the US Marshal stationed in La Center where he continued in this career until his death in 1914. His death certificate says that he died of Brights' disease which is a historical classification of kidney diseases that would be described in modern medicine as acute or chronic nephritis. The term is no longer used, as diseases are now classified according to their more fully understood causes.
