Rusha Griffith, daughter of Catherine Teel Bellah and Martin Griffith, of Oregon County, Missouri, was born February 21, 1875 in Thomasville, Missouri and died in 1940, unmarried. She is buried in the Bellah Cemetery near Thomasville.
The June 16, 1892 issue of the South Missourian lists Rusha Griffith as one of the school teachers attending the Teachers Institute of Alton, Missouri, and she taught school at Thomasville for several years.
One of her nieces, Helen Hoover Griffith Magruder wrote in her "Memories of Aunt Rush":
"Aunt Rush lived with Grandma so we saw a lot of her. Aunt Rush was always good to all the grandchildren. In fact, she was good at spoiling kids. She was a "liberated woman" before her time. When I can first remember Aunt Rush, she was a postmistress at Thomasville. I used to watch her leave in the mornings. Sometimes she rode sidesaddle on "Old Queen", but sometimes she rode in a buggy with "Old Queen" pulling it. I can't remember when she retired, but she had been postmistress long enough to get a civil service retirement check every month. So, she became the family banker. When anyone needed money they would go to Aunt Rush to borrow. She never did charge any interest. At one time, she bought an old house in Thomasville and started keeping roomers. I always loved Aunt Rush and I think she was an independent woman long before women were."
The house where she lived was near the post office on the main street of Thomasville. It had a porch all across the front and had a tin roof.
