She began her radio career in 1973 in Boston before relocating to Detroit then Dallas and eventually to Los Angeles in 1979. In 1980 she started playing jazz on KCRW-FM. Her uncensored show Saturday Night Avant Pop or "SNAP!" premiered on Saturday night, December 4, 1982 and aired until 1991. Besides music, she spoke on various political subjects to the point that she was fired in 1987 for a short period before returning. Simultaneously, she also started "Breakfast with the Beatles" on KMET-FM in 1983, and the show eventually moved to KLSX-FM, where she broadcasted every Sunday until her death. Critics and fans applauded her for her passion for music and new artists and agreed that she "loved her job." "No categories, no definitions, no pigeonholes," said O'Donoghue in January 1984, "just combinations of things that seem to go together." Although her health had declined, her death was unexpected. On October 28, 2021, KCRW-FM released the first episode of "Bent by Nature: Dierdre O'Donoghue and the Lost SNAP! Archives, a 10-part audio documentary series.
