My Family records showed he died on Oct 2, 1899. This is apparently an error as it is the exact death date of his father. Another family member pointed out he was listed in the 1900 Census records of Missouri as a widower, but not the 1910 Census.


He was the oldest of nine Children born to Rev Thomas Hanks and Mary(Goad)Hanks. He served as Sheriff of Jackson, Illinois.

He married Emily Lewis in June of 1854 in Maury, Tennessee. Together they had eleven children:
John Thomas Hanks June 9,1855- Jan 16,1909 Clay Arkansas
James Halliday Hanks March 13,1857 married Mary C. Bowlby (1859) on 25 May 1880 in Jackson, Illinois, United States
