Robert "Bob" L. Allen, Galesburg Chapel 80, of Galesburg died at 12:25 pm Friday, November 4, 2011 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born March 28, 1931 in Galesburg, Ill the son of Percy Lee and Hazel Ruth McHaffie Allen. He married Louise Brodine on July 28, 1956 at First Lutheran Church in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving is his son, Daniel Robert (Kathy) Allen of Galesburg; two daughters, Connie Marie (Barry) Witherell of Ft. Worth, Texas and Sandra Kay (Dave) Childers of Covington, Ga.; a sister, Leona May (Merle) Kluthe of Vandalia, Ill; seven grandchildren, five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, two sisters and a granddaughter, Dena Marie Witherell.
He served in US Army from 1951-1954 during the Korean War as Corporal. He received the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal National Defense Service Medal.
Bob first worked for the Victor Casket Company for 8 years, later working for Outboard Marine Corporation-Gale Products for 20 years. He retired from Bixby Zimmer Engineering in 1993. He received his GED upon return from the service and was a member of the Galesburg High School class of 1952. He was a co-founder and charter member of the Knox County Genealogical Society, where he was the first editor of their newsletter. He also was a member of the Local Lodge #1659 International Association of Machinist and Aerospace Workers. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and riverboat gambling. Bob truly enjoyed using his metal detector, in hopes of finding great treasures.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Tom Larsen will officiate. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm Monday evening at the chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery with Military Rites by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285.
