Son of Joseph Terry (1754-1820) of Virginia. died in Greenville. S.C. And his wife Lucy Hatcher born 1748 also of Virginia; died 1842 in Greenville, S.C.

Joseph lived in Edgefield Dist. SC until his 21st birthday. He moved to Caldwell Co, KY and was living with one of his older sisters who had married a Bannister Wade from that area. There he met and married a little 14 year old girl named Sarah Malinda Saxon. In 1811 Joshua Saxon decided to move his family to Claiborne Co, MS. Joseph and Malinda and the Saxon family went to Nashville, TN and picked up the Natchez Trace, following it all the way to Port Gibson, a little town on the Mississippi River. The family remained there until about 1828. Thousands of acres of Indian land was opened up for homesteading through out MS. Joseph and family moved to Madison Co on the Pearl River, within a stones throw of the Natchez Trace, no doubt Joseph had viewed the beauty of the land along the Pearl River and Natchez Trace 17 years before and decided "This is where I will build my homestead". He remained there until the late 1850s then moved to Brandon, in Rankin Co, MS. His son, Louis Saxon Terry, being an apothecary in Brandon and also a very famous painter of that period. Joseph was mostly a farmer, he did have other jobs, one being a worker on the ferry across the Pearl River.
All the children down through Emmaline was born in Caldwell Co, Ky. And the children down through James was born in Claiborne Co, MS the remainder in Madison Co, MS.
