Douglas J. Sharkey, 87, longtime resident of Lake McConaughy, died May 31, 2009 at his home. Doug was born October 5, 1921 in Elgin, NE., the son of Joseph and Daisy Campbell Sharkey. Doug helped the family in the dairy business milking nine cows before going to elementary school each day. He had a good appetite and would eat nine biscuits after doing the milking. He attended school in Elgin graduating from high school with the class of 1940. He received a Regent Scholarship. Doug then attended the University of Nebraska for two years before enlisting in the Army Air Corp which later became the Air Force. Doug was a B 17 pilot and flew thirty missions in the European Theatre during World War II. He was active in the Air Force for many years, retiring as Lt. Colonel. On September 8, 1946 Doug married Jane Dinges in Sacramento. Jane was a sergeant in the Marine Corp. The couple moved to Elgin where Doug taught school and served as a referee in high school sports as well as operating a farm. In 1956 they moved to North Platte and Doug became County Supervisor for the Farmers Home Administration. In 1961 Doug was transferred to the Ogallala office. Then in 1973 they moved to Kearney where Doug retired at the age of 52. They moved to Lake McConaughy and built their own home. Jane died in 1983. On December 28, 1985 Doug married Sondra McQueen. Doug was a member of the Ogallala Elks Lodge, and belonged to the American Legion in Elgin over fifty years. Doug enjoyed talking about his experiences during World War II. Other hobbies included reading, fishing and hunting. Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife Jane D. Sharkey in 1983 and his brother Willard C. Sharkey. Survivors include his wife Sondra Sharkey of Ogallala, his daughter Patricia and her husband Mark Lloyd of Valley City, ND; his step-son Mark McQueen of Omaha; two grandsons Brent (Sarah) Ohlson of Jonesboro, AR. and Colby (Angela) Ohlson, of Newark, AR; and one granddaughter London Lloyd of Valley City, ND. Two brothers-in-law Brad (Sheryl) Brooks of Merrill, IA; and Brian Brooks of Ogallala. Three sisters-in-law Sharyl (Dennis) Pankonin of Grant, Deb (Lynn) McCaig of Paxton, and Jan Davis of Papillion. Viewing will be Friday, June 5, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Draucker Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Saturday, June 6, at 10 a.m. in New Hope Worship Center on East `O` Street with Rev. Phil Ewert officiating. Interment in the Ogallala Cemetery with military honors by the Air Force Honor Guard. A memorial has been established to the Eppley Cancer Center for Breast Cancer Research.
