H.T. 'Hank' O'Neal Jr., Macon lawyer, dies at 58
MACON - The funeral for Macon attorney H.T. "Hank" O'Neal Jr. will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ingleside Baptist Church here, with burial in the cemetery of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Monroe County. Mr. O'Neal, senior partner with the law firm of O'Neal, Brown and Sizemore, died Thursday of cancer. He was 58.
A native of Macon, Mr. O'Neal was a graduate of Mercer University. He later taught criminal law at the university.
A former Bibb County State Court solicitor, Mr. O'Neal was a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He had practiced law in Macon for 11 years.
In 1958, Mr. O'Neal served as special prosecutor in the celebrated murder trial of Anjette Donovan Lyles in Macon. Mrs. Lyles was convicted of murder in the arsenic poisoning of her 9-year-old daughter' and was sentenced to death. A year later, however, she was declared insane and was sent to Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, where she died in 1977.
Mr. O'Neal is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bernice Pullen O'Neal; daughters, Mrs. Erin Gordon and Miss Patricia O'Neal, both of Macon; stepdaughter, Mrs. James Pritchett Jr. of Gray, sons, H.T. O'Neal III and J.B. O'Neal, both of Macon; stepson, Bruce Spengler of Macon; father, H.T. O'Neal Sr. of Macon; and sisters, Mrs. Robert B. Townsend of Atlanta, and Mrs. Vincent I. Peters, Mrs. Dan Searcy and Mrs. Fred Alston, all of Macon.
