"Miss Penny," as most knew her, was born May 19, 1904, at Little Rock and was the daughter of the late Mark and Elva Rexer Cutting. Due to her mother's early death, she was raised in Saint Joseph's Catholic orphanage in Little Rock. She moved to California as a young adult and was owner of an answering service for the Hollywood stars of MGM and Warner Brothers. She counted among her friends Clark Gable, Mae West and Jean Harlow.
She moved back to Pope County in the early 1960s and bought a farm east of Dover where she raised quarter horses. In the late 1970s she married Cliff Johnson and moved to the Round Rock community. After Mr. Johnson's death, she moved to Russellville.
Mrs. Johnson was the organizer of the Widows Club in Russellville and was active in the Pope County Republican Party. She lived alone until she was 94, and, after a broken hip lived in Stella Manor until her death. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Burt Cutting.
Survivors include three nephews, Wayne, Lawrence and Wendel Cutting, all of California; a foster daughter, Sophia Waugh of California; two stepgrandchildren, Rob Grill of Florida and Ron Davis of Illinois; and her guardian, Kay Roberts of Russellville.
Graveside service and burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rest Haven Memorial Park by the Rev. Ernest Hardesty. Arrangements are by Shinn Funeral Service.
