William was born January 16, 1839 in Athens County, Ohio, son of Samuel S. & Dorinda Wakeman. He died April 21, 1918 in Bloomingdale, Vernon County, Wisconsin, aged 79 years, 3 months and 5 days, and was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Sparta, Wisconsin.
On October 25, 1874 William was united in marriage to Elizabeth Silbaugh in Vernon County, Wisconsin. She was born in 1854 in Ohio, daughter of Abner Silbaugh and Mary J. Adams. She died January 1, 1916, probably in Sparta, Wisconsin, aged about 62 yeas, and was buried there in Woodlawn Cemetery.

By his second wife he had at least four more children: Ida, Letitia, Josephine and Chester. He may have had another daughter who died young of diptheria.
