Just found today that the ancestors of my great grandfather James Matthew Phillips were of Royalty from Wales ~~~~~~~~~~This is going to be exciting to me. My grandmother Anna M. Phillips Lanigan who died in Davenport, Iowa would love this info. Also my g.g. grandfather was a Union soldier from Athens, Ohio~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

JAMES MATTHEW PHILLIPS, son of WILLIAM and CLARACY HEWITT PHILLIPS, was born in Kaleska, Ohio on June 03, 1857. He passed away at his home, 457 South Willard on February 27, 1923. He was united in marriage to MISS MARY ELIZABETH McDERMOTT, March 04, 1878.

To this union were born five children, One son JOHNNY preceded him in death; His widow and the following children; MRS MARY HUDSON, MRS CLARA HARLAN,(Clara Clark) MRS ANNA LANNIGAN, and HENRY PHILLIPS all of Ottumwa, Iowa

Six grandchildren; RILEY HUDSON, HARRY CLARK, LENORA CLARK, ELIZABETH HARTLEY, JAMES LANNIGAN (my dad)and TIMOTHY LANNIGAN. (brother of my dad James Lanigan)

Four great-grandchildren; ROBERT HUDSON, JACK HUDSON, ROSEMARY HARTLEY and one brother JOHN PHILLIPS of Carbondale, Ohio. And a host of other relatives and friends. He was a WW 1 Vet.

He was a member of the Coal Miners Union No 162. He was the first one to join the union.

Pallbearers were his friends and brothers of the Union.
*My grandmother Anna told me that most people just called him MATT.

W.B.DEFORD, GUY LESTER, GEORGE LESTER, VIRGIL LESTER, CARL CRACTIO and ED WARE.

Funeral services were held March 01, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church of Ottumwa, Iowa at 9:00 a.m., conducted by Rev. Father H.G. Hogan. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Gone but, not forgotten.

*Records show him as being born in a town called KELESKI. He was a coal miner and lived in Monroe County before moving to Ottumwa.Most people just called him MATT. He lived in Avery.From "History of Monroe County Iowa" by Frank Hickenlooper 1896."Avery was established in 1868 when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railway was put through and is 5-6 miles east of Albia. In the vicinity of Avery are the Chisholm Mines which are now about worked out."Hynes City lies 1 3/4 miles southeast of Avery". The locality is also known as "Smoky Hollow." It was named after the superintendent of the mine, Faley Hynes. It had a population of 250-300 people. My great grandpa was a coal miner here as well as my Clark family.
