William Joseph Garvey, 76, Coeur d' Alene resident since 1901, died in late December following a long illness.
He was born Sept. 1, 1889 in Buckingham, Quebec, and came to Coeur d' Alene from Iron Mountain, Mich.
He was one of the first students at IHM Academy and was an outstanding football player.
Garvey married the former Laura Secaur April 12, 1920 at St. Thomas church by Father Al Pregenzer, C.Ss.R. A veteran of World War I, Garvey was a member of the World War I barracks in Coeur d' Alene. Survivors include his widow, still a resident of Coeur d' Alene; two sons, William Joseph Jr., of Sandpoint and Father Roderick Garvey, C.Ss.R., of Portland, who was stationed at St. Thomas in the late 1950's and early 1960's; seven daughters, Mrs. Colleen Chase, Mrs. Mary Walker, and Mrs. Joan Steele, Coeur d' Alene; Mrs. Frances Hydes, Idaho Falls, Sister M. Roderick, IHM, Scranton, Pa., Mrs. Rita Fitzpatrick and Mrs. Ed Cuzzetto, Spokane; a brother Edmond, Coeur d' Alene; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Jones in California; 34 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
