John W. Garrett, 79, died at his home ten miles east of the city. He was born in Overton Co., Tenn. January 5, 1848 and came to Howell County in 1852 with his parents.
During the Civil War the Garrett family fled to Springfield. Although a mere boy, John enlisted in the Union Army as a teamster.
In 1875 he wed Laura Daniels.
He is survived by his widow and children, Jacob, Lyman, Will, Emmett, Ben, Stillman, and Mrs. Melda Petty; one brother Stillman, and two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Sarah Catherine) Moore and Mrs. David (Martha) Collins.
