While the headstone may say that she was born in 1868. I do not believe this to be the case. No U.S. Census Report will backup the 1868 date. Instead the 1900 U.S. Census Report makes good sense when stating that she was born, December 1865.

Martha Jane Boyles is first seen at four years old in the 1870 U.S. Census for Platte, Andrew county, Missouri. Her loving parents being Johial and Margaret Boyles. This is a time shortly after the Civil War when feelings in Missouri ran very deep over the outcome of the war. Many in Missouri had owned slaves before the War and now their slaves had all been set free. Then there were many thousands from both sides that had died or were badly injured in the War. Everyone knew someone that had died. Her father had fought for the North and may have wanted to get a fresh start in someplace far away from Missouri. Or, it may have been that he decided to move so as to be closer to family.

The 1880 Census finds her parent's, Johial and Margaret Boyles, living in Soda Springs, Clackamas, Oregon. Her sister, Mary [about 12 years older] has moved out and is married and Samuel Philips who was like an brother [having been raised as a son] is now living nearby trying to make a go at farming on his own.

Miss Martha Jane Boyles was married to Edgar William Black in 1899, Clackamas County. Aparently, divorce occured shortly after the marriage as Edgar remarried on 23 Sept 1907, to Mary A. [Bales] Black. NOTE: Her first marriage was to a Mr. Bales; there being two son's and a daughter from her first marriage as seen in the 1910 U.S. Census Report for Orleans, Linn, Oregon. Gravesite Details

The birth date on the marker is mostly likely in error. In the 1870 Census Martha was four. The age difference between 4 and 2 years old is huge. Several of the census reported her birth in 1866.
