Martha Ann Jones entered this world February 26,1932, in Belmont County, Ohio, the third of five children born to Jane Hopper and Joseph Jones. At 18, Martha married William Plummer, 22, a man from a neighboring farm.

The Plummers first three daughters, Josephine, Deborah Jane, and Rachel E., were born in Belmont County, Ohio. The next four of their seven children were born in Adams County, Indiana: Emily Angeline, John Lawrence, Richard Crandel, and William Robert. Their youngest, William Robert, was born four months after his father's death December 4, 1862.

Widowed at 30 years of age with seven children, Martha remained in Indiana until her 1871 remarriage to Jonathan Ray, Jr., a widower with seven living children, who had relocated to Jackson County, Kansas. Martha and Jonathan added two boys, Perry and Sherman Grant, to their blended family of 14 children.

Jonathan Ray died in 1886, leaving Martha again a widow. Martha lived the last ten years of her life with her daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and John Mulanax, as an invalid, requiring almost constant care. Martha was preceded in death by three of her nine children: William R. Plummer (10), Perry Ray (2), and Deborah Jane Plummer McLain (46). She was a member of the United Brethern Church of Soldier.
