HICKMAN - HALSEY - Joseph LeRoy Hickman, son of John Wesley and Mary Dunaway Hickman, was born near Des Moines IA on Sep 9, 1867 and departed this life at Broken Bow, NE on Oct 11, 1941 at the age of 74yrs 1mo and 2das. He was one of the oldest of a large family of children, all of whom, with the exception of 2 brothers, preceded him in death. When a small child he came with his parents to the eastern part of the state, later moving to St Paul NE. His father died on Jan 17, 1882. In the fall of that year he with his mother, brothers and sisters, came to Custer county where he grew to manhood. In 1895 he went with neighbors in a covered wagon train to Calvert, TX and from there to Norman, OK, then called Chichasaw nation. It was here that on Oct 25, 1898 he was united in marriage to Miss Jennie Farritor and to this union 9 children were born, 4 of whom died in infancy. After his marriage they returned to Custer county, taking up farming and later he conducted a livery business in Broken Bow. In 1908 they moved to Blaine county, living on a homestead southeast of Purdum, NE. This was home until the fall of 1940, when they moved to Halsey, where he lived until his death. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife; 3 daughters and 2 sons : Mrs pearl Donahoo of Dunning, Mrs Emma Donahoo of Halsey, Mrs Mildred Haselroth of Moline, IL, Charlie of Corvallis, OR and Bernard of Omaha, NE; 9 grandchildren; 2 brothers, Home of Yuma CO and Fred of Broken Bow. A host of other relatives and friends will miss his cheery presence. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church at Purdum on Monday, Rev H.H. Addy officiating. Burial was made in the Purdum cemetery.
