Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. Served as a Sergeant in Company G, 9th New Hampshire Infantry. On May 12, 1864 at a battle at Spotsylvania, Virginia, he showed leadership and gallantly when both officers in command of assault skirmish line had been wounded. He took command of his company, deploying weapons fire in the skirmish line and after being relieved from command he asked and obtained permission to fight in another company.
