Wendell V. Locke died August 5, 2007. He was born August 19, 1924 in Douglas, Kansas to Noel and Myrle Locke.

He graduated from North Little Rock, Arkansas High School in 1943 and went directly into the Army, serving as a combat medic with the 12th Armored Division in Europe. When he returned from WWII, he joined the Oklahoma National Guard and was called back into active duty with the 45th Division during the Korean War, serving in combat zones as Engineer Reconnaissance Officer, Engineer Intelligence Officer, and Assistant Division Engineer.

Following further training at Texas A&M College, he began his goal of becoming an architect, attending Oklahoma State University. At OSU, he received a BA in Art in 1950 and BS in Architecture in 1953. Wendell was the founder and president of Locke-Minor Architects in October 1962. The firm designed numerous school education projects in the state of Oklahoma and surrounding states, as well as projects in Saudi Arabia. He was principal in the firm until he retired in 1995, but remained active in the firm until 2000. Locke, Wright, Foster was one of the principal architects of the Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City, and the building received a national design award. Forty-five years later, the firm is still active as LWPB Architecture.

Wendell was active in many organizations including the Oklahoma State University Alumni Association, Rotary International, and the American Institute of Architects. He received many awards including being named as Oklahoma State University's Distinguished Alumni in 1979, commissioned as an Honorary Kentucky Colonel in 1981, and recipient of the Oklahoma Chapter AIA 'Professional Award for 1981'. He served as District Governor for Rotary International in 1986-87, was President of the OKC chapter of the American Institute of Architects, Fellow in the AIA National Organization, and President of the National School Planners Association.

Wendell is preceded in death by his mother, father, and sister. He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Wilburta (Willie) Locke; his daughters, Diane and husband Ron Siegman, Jeanne and husband Barry Millican, Anita Haftek, Karen and husband Jeff Dubbe; stepson, R.K. and wife Lynne Arnold; and step-daughter, Carrie and husband Verlin Vink. Other survivors include his adored grandchildren, Doni, Derick, Crystal, Isaac, Mitchell, Melissa, Angie, Chuck, Jack, Macie, Brittny, Bo, Bi; and seven great-grandchildren with another on the way.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday August 9, 2007 at Crown Heights Christian Church with interment to follow at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery. Viewing at Vondel Smith North Colonial Chapel will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with family visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Alzheimer's Association, 5400 N. Grand Blvd., Suite 255, OKC 73112.
