Charles was one of ten children born to John and Mary Cook Gray. He was born in Brunswick, Maine in Cumberland County. He went to Minnesota about 1857, where the family ended up in St Anthony in the Twin Cities. He and his brother, James, left for Peru in about 1860. Charles worked for the Peruvian Mint as chief engineer. Charles Wesley Gray married Josephine Langill Gray in Lima, Peru, South America. They had one child, Josephine G Gray. In 1883 Charles and his family moved back to Minnesota and lived in Minneapolis. After his wife's death in 1901, he lived with his daughter and family in Baltimore, Maryland.
