ABILENE -- Alberta McCall, of Abilene, died Thursday Oct. 27, 2011, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was 77.
Alberta was born Nov. 2, 1933, in Kansas City, Kan., to Albert and Daisy Stussy. Six years later, the family moved to Salina. Alberta attended Marymount College after high school and became a nurse, which she always knew was her calling.
In 1958 she married Darwin McCall and moved to a farm near Guide Rock, Neb. While there, she worked at the hospital at nearby Superior, Neb., where she eventually became the head of nursing. She and Darwin moved to the New Cambria area and she continued nursing at St. John's hospital and later the Salina clinic in Salina.
After nursing, she became a homemaker and mother to her two children, Lara and John. She was always supportive of her kids' activities and became an activities leader for the Solomon Wranglers, which she did for 36 years. In the '70s, Alberta took up the craft of wheat weaving and later in life developed the technique of wheat maquetry. Alberta was a giving person and loved children and animals. Alberta was proceeded in death by her parents and husband, Darwin. She is survived by her daughter, Lara Kratochvil, husband Mitch and grandchildren, Andrea and Zachary, of Udall; son, John McCall and wife Patti Anguiano, of New Cambria; and sister, Dorothy Bradley, of Henderson, Nev.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Ryan Mortuary, 137 North Eighth St, Salina, with the Rev. Charles England officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, New Cambria. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church, New Cambria.
