First Bishop of Diocese of Wheeling. Titled Most ReverendMost Reverend Richard Vincent Whelan served as the 1st Bishop of the Diocese of Wheeling. Bishop Whelan is considered the primary founder of the Catholic Church in the state of West Virginia. During the middle 1840s, Rev. Whelan erected a cathedral at Wheeling (then Virginia). During that period he also organized parish schools, the Wheeling Female Academy, and a hospital/orphan asylum. He opened an ecclesiastical seminary in his own home for the training of priests. In 1850, the bishopic of Wheeling was formed and Dr. Whelan was made its first bishop. He addressed the Vatican Council of 1869-70 on important matters of the church such as the definition of the dogma of papal infallibility. His remains repose at Mount Calvary Cemetery beneath the altar of a beautiful chapel erected to his memory.
