Murdered - Shot five times through a window of his home

The man sought in the slaying of Virlyn Blalock was found dead in the backseat of his car. GERALD FRED BARNES, 413 Cascade Road, Atlanta GA, was found Thursday, Aug 29, 1963, in a Douglas County cemetery outside Lithia Springs. Investigating officers indicated cause of death was suicide due to asphyxiation from carbon monoxide. Exhaust pipes were fitted with a garden hose that was ran inside the car.
Barnes wife identified the body and indicated they had spoken Monday night but she had not seen him in weeks.

Barnes was the subject of a statewide search since Virlyn Blalock of Keithburg Georgia was fatally shot.

Blalock and Barnes were co-workers at an Atlanta firm. Witnesses identified a picture of Barnes as a man who had visited Blalock earlier Sunday.

Cherokee County sheriff's office issued a murder warrant for Barnes.

Gerald Fred Barnes was known by the alias KIP JONES alleged to have lived in Marietta but there was no proof he ever lived in Marietta as of Aug 30 1963.
