It has recently come to my attention that Homer's middle name was "SAMUEL" sourced from a death certificate of a daughter and from another independent source of a letter passed down in the family. Legally he was never adopted into the Smith family from what I understand even though he descendants use the SMITH surname today. So his full name was HOMER SAMUEL DAUGHERTY and he descended to go by HOMER SMITH because of issues with his father.
