David Gregory Norris was the son of Littleton Harris Norris and Harriet Gregory Norris. The other children of Littleton and Harriet Norris were George W. Norris, Thomas J. Norris, Joseph Norris, Jane Adeline Norris Joseph, James M Norris, John T. Norris, Martha "Mattie" Norris Taylor and Benjamin F. Norris.

David's paternal grandfather was James Norris, and he was a veteran of the War of 1812. David's paternal grandmother was Sarah "Sally" Patrick Norris. Josiah Norris and James Patrick were the great grandfathers of David Gregory Norris, and they were soldiers in the American Revolution. David was named after his maternal grandfather, David W. Gregory. His maternal grandmother was Mary Hewlet Dunklin Gregory. Mary's brother was Daniel Dunklin, and he was the 5th Governor of Missouri. Other Revolutionary ancestors of David are Gerrard Gregory, Isaac Gregory, Charles Sullivan, Mary Charlton Sullivan, Jean Warthen Dunklin, Joseph Dunklin and Joseph Dunklin, Jr.

David Gregory Norris was a Confederate soldier from Arkansas during the Civil War. The division he served was Artillery. Minnie Lou Norris, David's widow, received his Confederate Pension.

David was married four times. On 3 August 1870, David Gregory Norris and Frances "Fannie" E. Fitzgerland were married in Union Parish, Louisiana. Their children were John, Joseph "Joe" Addison and Leona Norris. On 19 October 1884, David Gregory Norris and Mary L. Wadkins were married in Union County, Arkansas. On 4 May 1887, David Gregory Norris and Anna "Annie" Chandler were married in Union County, Arkansas. Their children were Charles Robert, Esther, Crawford Littleton, Clarence and Julius Carl Norris. Anna died before 14 July 1900. On 13 November 1905, David Gregory Norris married Mrs. Minnie Lou Cameron Graves. The children of David and Minnie were Jeff Davis, A.J., Mary and Walter Norris.
