EX-BLUFFTON RESIDENT, TEACHER, MARTHA GOFF POPEJOY, 76, DIES

Wells County native and a resident of Carroll County since 1947, Mrs. Robert A. (Martha) Popejoy, 76, collapsed in the Delphi Post Office Wednesday, Jan. 18, of an apparent heart seizure and was rushed to Lafayette where she died in St. Elizabeth hospital.

Funeral services were held Saturday at Delphi with burial in a cemetery in Carroll County.

A daughter of Emery B. and Jennie Gertrude Roop Goff of Bluffton, Mrs. Popejoy was born May 12, 1907 in Wells County. A graduate of Bluffton High School class of 1925, she attended Indiana University at Bloomington and subsequently graduated from Butler College at Indianapolis.

Mrs. Popejoy taught briefly in the primary grades at the former Central School on Washington St., then took a supervisory assignment at the State Girls School at Indianapolis, following the death of her parents during the 1920's.

Her husband, Robert Z. Popejoy, a disabled World War II veteran, died in 1970 in Delphi where the couple had owned and operated a family produce business.

Surviving are a son, Thomas L. Popejoy of Canton, Mich., a GMC production supervisor at Detroit; a daughter, Mrs. Dennis (Roberta) Mattio of Lafayette; a brother, Robert G. Goff, a retired U.S. Navy officer who resides in New York City, and three grandchildren.
