Died—on Thursday, May 27, 1897, Mr. John E. Mason, at the age of 66 years and 6 months, after a lingering illness.
Mr. Mason's death was not a surprise to his many friends in this county, as it had been generally thought that his condition was such that it was only a question of time before the Creator would claim him as a soldier in His army on the other shore.
A special effort was made to get all the living children home before he passed away, which was accomplished.
Deceased was born in Killingworth, Connecticut, April 20, 1831, and moved from there to the state of Ohio in 1837, and then to Iowa in 1854.
While in the state of Iowa he was married to Miss Lucy A. Fowler in 1856.
In April, 1862, he enlisted in Company I, of the Twenty-Fourth y Infantry and served two years defending his country.
On the 16th day of May, 1856, he was wounded at the battle of Champion Hill, and then returned to his home on furlough. He was discharged by order of his surgeon, being unfit for further military service as a result of his wound.
In the spring of 1866, he, in company with his family, came to Nebraska, where he resided until death.
During his long and continuous residence in Burt county, he has proven himself a citizen worthy of the respect of everybody, and built a comfortable home for the remaining members of his family.
As a result of the union of Mr. and Mrs. Mason, five sons and seven daughters graced their cheerful home, there being now living four sons and five daughters, respectively: J.L. Mason, W.D. Mason, W.L. Mason and Robert P. Mason; Miss Dolly Mason, Mrs. T.L. Tucker, Mrs. C.R. Gammel, Mrs. Chas. Broughton and Mrs. Jessie Smith.
Two brothers and one sister of deceased were present at the funeral: Mr. Z.A. Mason of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Mr. A.P. Mason and Mrs. W.W. Latta of this city.
The funeral took place at deceased's late residence on Saturday, May 29th, under the auspices of Boomer Post, No. 118, G.A.R. (of which he was an honored member) and the W.R.C. Rev. Eggleston conducted the sermon, after which a score of sympathizing friends followed the remains to the Tekamah Cemetery where the last sad rites were performed.
The bereaved wife and family have the sympathy of the entire community during their sad hours of affliction.
