DIES AT MINNEQUA HOSPITAL

John N. Graham, aged 49 years, died at Minnequah hospital, Pueblo, on Sunday morning, death being the result of an operation for appendicitis.
One month ago he accepted a position as meat cutter for the Pinon Supply Company at Walsenburg. He was taken sick on Monday , Sept. 2nd while at his work, and on Tuesday was removed to the hospital and the operation was performed the same day. Everything that was possible was done for him but he did not rally and on Sunday morning passed away.
The remains were brought to the old home in Coal Creek, now occupied by his sister, Mrs. John Penny, on Monday afternoon.
The deceased was well and favorably known in the coal camps and had hosts of friends who were startled to learn of his death.
He is survived by a wife and five children, three brothers, and one sister,
His father was laid to rest twenty-seven years ago and his mother two years ago.
Being the eldest of the family, he, at the time of his father's death, assumed the roll of father and brother and it is on this account that his loss is felt all the more by his brothers and sister, who had become accustomed to go to brother John for counsel on matters that needed care and consideration.
The funeral occurred on Tuesday afternoon from the church in Coal Creek, the services being conducted by the Rev. Johnson.
A choir composed of friends of the deceased sang "Abide with Me", "Beyond the Smiling and the Weeping: "Looking this Way" "Some Sweet Day" "It Is Well with My Soul" and "Safe in the Arms of Jesus."
The entire service was under the auspices of Coal Creek Lodge I.O.O.F., of which deceased was a member and some of his fraternal brothers acted as pall bearers.
Interment was made in Highland Cemetery.
The following is a short sketch of his life.
John N. Graham was born near Glascow, Scotland, January 19th, 1863. In April 1883 he came to Coal Creek from Erie, Penn. and has resided in various parts of the state since that time.
In 1890 he was married to Miss Mary Walker, Daughter of Andrew Walker, the ceremony taking place in Coal Creek. This union was blessed with one child, Mrs. Joseph Randall; now a resident of Leadville, Colo.
His wife died in 1894, and was laid to rest.
In November 1897 he was married to Miss Mary Hicks, daughter of John Hicks, of Rockvale, and four children were born of this union: Elsie, Bessie, John Neil, Jr., and Albert.
He occupied the position of teacher in the public school at Coal Creek and twice passed the examination for mine inspector.
About ten years ago he became connected with the Colorado Supply Company and while in their employ held positions in their stores at Coal Basin, Red Stone, Cardiff, and was manager at Marion. At the time of his death he held a position as meat cutter in Pinon Company at Walsenburg.
He was beloved by all who knew him being a man of sterling qualities.

"A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home
Which never can be filled."
