THE CITIZEN, FLORENCE, FREMONT COUNTY, COLORADO - NOVEMBER 5, 1942

DEATH THURSDAY OF C. I. DAVIES BLOW TO COMMUNITY

The untimely death last Thursday evening of Craddock I. Davies, labor leader and district president of the United Mine Workers of America, was a shock to the entire community, which believed he might recover from injuries received in an accident at the Colorado Portland Cement Co., quarry last Tuesday afternoon when he was hit by the electric trolley car whose operator failed to see him and a companion until too late to stop the car.
....In his death the community has lost a leader in civic life, a man of upstanding character who was respected by all with whom he came in contact. Quiet and unassuming, he had the force of character which commanded the liking and respect of all the men under him.
....Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon at 2:30 with the Rev. E. H. Hoffman presiding. An abundance of beautiful flowers filled the church, which was packed to capacity with friends from all over the state, including many UMWA officials and their families. The flowers were in charge of Miss Marie Ossola, Mrs. Annie Cowperthwaite, Mrs. John Camerlo, Mrs. Otto Emrich, Mrs. John Frew, Mrs. James Weir, Mrs. Joe Berta, Mrs. O. F. Nigro of Denver, Mrs. Fred Hefferly and Mrs. Austin Barnes.
....Mrs. J. J. Howells, Mrs. Richard Evans, Mrs. E. H. Hoffman, Will Morgan and George Jessop sang "Sometime We'll Understand," "In the Gloaming," and "Goodnight and Good Morning."
....Honorary pall bearers were Robert Donaldson, Everett Runkle, Wm. Beer, Frank Zavislan, Thomas Meyers and Hugh Wilson. Active pall bearers were Ray Cowperthwaite, John Camerlo, Joe Berta, Fred Hefferly, Austin Barnes and Earl Smith. Burial was in Union Highland cemetery, where graveside services were held by both the officials of the B. P. O. E., No. 611, and UMWA.
....Craddock Ivor Davies was born in Coal Creek 57 years ago on Dec. 2, 1884, and was a resident of Fremont county all his life. He was a member of the Elk's lodge, and of the UMWA, of which he was district president. He was married on April 29, 1908 to Miss Celestine Calmett, by whom he is survived and also by the following other relatives: five children, Mrs. Emily D. Lanham, Long Beach, Calif., Evaid, Stanley, Russel and Iva Dean, Florence; one sister, Mrs. Mary Olsen of Sandecoulee, Mont. and one brother, I. H. Davies of Long Beach, Calif.
