DEATH OF DANIEL FLYNN

Death has claimed another pioneer of Morton county. Daniel Flynn died at his home Monday evening of heart trouble; aged 70 years. He was a healthy looking man in spite of his advanced age and on the day of his death has passed away the hours walking around the yard at home and expected to soon again be able to attend to his duties at the store having been at home for several days on account of not feeling well. Nothing serious was expected and the blow was as sudden as his death. He expired shortly after he fell to the floor.

The deceased was born in the county of Sligo, Ireland and at the age of five years came to this country with his parents and located at St. Johns, New Brunswick. Five years after they arrived in this country both of his parents died within short intervals. At the age of 17 young Flynn left Canada and located in Boston, Mass., where he learned the shoe makers trade and shortly afterwards launched into business for himself. At the age of 24 he got the western fever and came to St. Paul and started into an extensive shoe business. He stayed in that city for 20 years and prospered. While there he was married to Miss Isabella Cox. The ceremony was performed by Father Caillet, the vicar general of the diocese.

To this happy union 11 children were born. Twenty-one years ago he arrived in Mandan with his family and engaged in the shoe business and still continued in that business until his death. Mr. Flynn enjoyed the universal respect of his fellow citizens and has held several public positions of trust showing the respect and esteem in which he was held. He served a term as postmaster. He has always been a faithful worker for the Catholic church and was one of the active men who established the Catholic church on its firm foundation here.

He leaves besides his widow, nine children to mourn his loss. Hugh, who is a telegraph operator at Sioux City, Iowa, Mrs. D. K. Bryant, Huron, S. D., Mrs. E. J. Steele, Portland, Oregon, Mrs. Baldwin, Nellie, Harry, Kittie, Daniel and Stella, who reside at home.

The funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s church, the Very Rev. D. V. Collins officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the St. Joseph’s Catholic cemetery. It was one of the largest funerals ever held in Mandan. As a token of their esteem the business men closed their stores and attended the funeral.
