Del was born in Pauline, Nebraska on May 5, 1925. He served in the Navy during World War II aboard a minesweeper as a third class petty officer (coxswain). He married Doris Merritt in 1954 in Bloomington, MN and graduated from Northwestern College in Minneapolis in 1955. He then moved his family to Denver, where he worked in radio for nine years. He moved to Phoenix in 1964 and worked for KHEP Radio, General Electric, Honeywell and Motorola. Del retired in 1990. Services were held on September 20 at Desert Hill Church,Phoenix, Arizona.
