US Congressman. Born in Lumberton, Robeson County, North Carolina, he graduated from the University of North Carolina and served in the US Navy during World War I. After the war he studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Lumberton, North Carolina. He was elected solicitor of the ninth judicial district of North Carolina, serving (1938, 1942, 1946-49). In 1949, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first Congress and to the next three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1957. An unsuccessful for re-nomination, he retired from politics. He died at age 63 in Lumberton, North Carolina.
