Actor. He was a prolific American stage and silent screen actor of the early 1900s thru 1936. He appeared in D.W. Griffith's groundbreaking 1915 film classic "The Birth of a Nation", playing the Confederate Colonel Ben Cameron. Born on an Alabama plantation, he enlisted in the First Alabama Regiment in 1898, during the Spanish–American War, but never left Jacksonville, Florida as he had a fever. His 1901 stage debut was in New York City, in a role in "Under Southern Skies," which he played for three years. His film career started in 1909. In 1936, he collapsed on the set after completing his scenes in the film "China Clipper." After being admitted to the hospital, he died three weeks later. He was married twice.
