{11 May 2016: Biography of Laurell by Grant H. Collar Jr, b: 1931. Laurell was a first cousin, once removed of my father, Grant Sr (1901-1978). Laurell Charles Harmon HUGHES (second of five siblings), b: 26 Nov 1912 on the homestead of his parents near Vancouver, Clark County, Washington, d: Oct 1973 Corning, Tehama County, California and was buried there in Sunset Hill Cemetery where he had been the sexton, served in the United States Army in World War II, m: Corning to Elsie V. McECHERAN of Corning, b: 1912, who still lived there 1993, no children. The double tombstone of Laurell and Elsie had her 1912 year of birth but no year of death.

In 15 Apr 1940 Census of Corning, Tehama County, California: John P. Elliott [third husband of Fannye ARBOGAST Hughes Snow Elliott], head, age 74, b: Iowa, owned a house at 1211 South Fourth Ave valued $5,500, education: grade 8; wife [Laurell's mother] Fannye Elliott, age 48, b: Oregon, education: grade 11, “owner of beauty shop”, worked 52_weeks in previous year; stepson [of John] Laurell Hughes, age 28, b: [on the homestead of his parents near Vancouver, Clark County] Washington, single, education: grade 8, “farm hand”, worked 52 weeks in previous year for total of $750. All three of them had lived in the “same place” [Corning] in Apr 1935.
