January 6, 2013: a first cousin once removed and a niece of the subject offer the following information: Joe's mother, Mary (Anna Marie) Beckman was 17 and unmarried when he was born. She refused to name the subject's father; therefore, nothing is known of him. It appears that Joe's mother had little, if any, interest in parenting him. Joe lived with and was raised by his maternal grandparents. It is unknown if he had any contact with his mother or his stepfather, John M. Greer, or half siblings, during their adult lives. Joe predeceased his mother by a few years.

Joe was 11 when his grandmother died; 12 when his grandfather died a few months later. His mother's eldest brother, Frederick C. Beckman and his wife Mary Beyke Weth/Wade, took him into their home at that time. He never married and had no children.

He owned a jewelry store/business in Sheffield, AL prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army and serving in WW II. He was a traveling salesman.
