The only child of Hilbert Black Tingley and Adelaide Olivia Rucker Tingley.

Alice became a Professor and for more than 35 years taught Biology at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina. She earned her education at Brenau University (GA), Putnam Hall (NY), Berkeley Institute(NY), Vassar University (NY), Shorter College (GA), Columbia University (NY) and summer work at Emory University (GA) and Rockefeller Institute.

Her father was a prominent Doctor in Rockaway Beach, Long Island, who was killed while attempting to board a train.
