"Matt" Gibson, born in Missouri, who came to Collin County in 1851, became an active member of the ranger force which so valiantly protected all reputable pioneers before the country was sufficiently populated to warrant the establishment of stable courts or civil government. During the Civil war he fought as a Confederate soldier, and, with the coming of peace, resumed his farming and stock raising. In these occupations he met with fair success, besides leaving a record for stanch private citizenship and useful public service. For ten years he served as treasurer of Parker County and, prior to his death in 1905, held various township offices of trust. Historical Review of South-East Texas, Vol 2, by Dermot Hardy and Maj.
