He was a sawmill operator until the mid 1950's. After the decline of the timber he raised cattle and broilers until his retirement. As a young man he enjoyed fox hunting and later in life he became an avid coon hunter, spending many nights in the woods with his friends and coonhounds. He was a life long resident of Cleburne County. He was of the Christian Faith, Nephews and nieces enjoyed spending time at Uncle Orvind's as they were growing up.
He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Altom, a brother Truman Altom, and his wife of 57 years, Hollis Reed Altom who he married on August 1, 1940.
He is survived by his son Vernon Altom and wife Nita of Ida, Arkansas, a daughter Laverne Williams and husband Travis of Wilburn, Arkansas, Granddaughters Dr. Melissa Altom and husband Glenn Lamb of Aurora, MO., Shay Deckard and husband Michael of Ida, Arkansas, Grandsons Ashley Altom and wife Reeanna of Conway, AR., Rusty Williams of Drasco, AR., Great-Granddaughters Ansley Deckard, Kate Williams, Sophie Willliams, and Cora Beth Altom, Great Grandsons Noah Lamb, Hunter Lamb other relatives and many friends.
Pallbearers are Glenn Lamb, Michael Deckard, Ashley Altom, Rusty Williams, Kenneth Altom, Kendall Altom, Donnie Altom and Duane Gay.
Funeral Services were held Saturday October 22, 2011 at Pleasant Ridge Union Church with Bro. Odell Altom and Bro. Billy Henderson officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. Family Funeral Service 100 w. Searcy St. in charge of the arrangements.
