Oliver D. Heald, who died at the
Home of his daughter, Mrs. H. Russell, 816 Mendocino Street. Pasadena, Cal., was born September 19, 1839, near Salem, Ohio. He moved to Iowa in 1849, enlisted In the Army jn 1862 as a private and served in the 24th Iowa Infantry until June, 1866, when he was commissioned first lieutenant and transferred to this 14th U. S. Colored Heavy Artillery, from which he was discharged in January, 1866, having served three and one half years in the Army. He was in all the battles of the Vicksburg Campaign and the Siege of Vicksburg, was in Horey's division of the 13th Army Corps after the surrender of Vicksburg and the march of Jackson, Miss.
The 13th Army Corps was ordered back to Vicksburg and from there to New Orleans, LA and after campaigning in that state including the disastrous Red River campaign, the division in which Mr. Heald served was transferred to the 19th Army Corps, and ordered to Petersburg.
That order was changed to Washington, and finally to the Shenandoah Valley, under General Sherman, and he was in all of the battles of Sheriden's command in the Shenandoah Valley.
After defeating General Early's army and cleaning up the Shenandoah Valley, Mr. Heald's regiment joined Sherman in North Carolina; there he ended his entire active service, being honorably discharged in sixteen battles besides the forty days' siege of Vicksburg.
After returning from the army he was united In marriage to Sarah M. Winaies in June, 1866, at Springsvllie, Iowa.
To this union were born nine children, five boys and four girls, of whom five children are now living, Mrs.Hermie Russell and Mrs. Ray Harold, of Pasedena; Mrs. J. E. Wright of Kingsley; H.G. Heald of Kennebec, SD; and F. C. Heald of Sioux City.
