U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, (1813-14, 19-22). In 1826, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Willie P. Mangum, reelected to the Twentieth and to the two succeeding Congresses and reelected as an Anti-Jacksonian candidate to the Twenty-third Congress, serving until 1835. Unsuccessful for reelection, he relocated to Tennessee, practiced of law and was a member of the Tennessee State House of Representatives, (1843-45).
