NORFOLK - Memorial services for Phyllis F. Ackerman, 88, of Norfolk will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church.

Burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Home for Funerals.

She died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008, at Faith Regional Health Services.

Phyllis was born on May 30, 1919, in St. Paul, the daughter of Andrew H. and Sadie (Buchfinck) Fairbairn. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1937.
During the World War II, Phyllis worked at the Cornhusker Ordnance Plant at Grand Island. After the war, she worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in various locations.
While working for the telephone company in Fullerton, Phyllis married George C. Ackerman on March 8, 1952, in Lincoln. They made their home in Central City and Cedar Rapids before moving to Norfolk in 1957. Phyllis began her career with Sherwood Medical in 1965 and retired in 1983.
Phyllis had been a member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. She had been very active in her church. She had served as a deacon, Sunday school and Bible teacher. She was active in the Presbyterian Women and her circle.
Following her retirement, Phyllis worked for Region IV as a housemother. She volunteered to deliver meals on wheels, worked at the soup kitchen and the food pantry. Phyllis was active in the PTA, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and the YMCA Aquajets.

Phyllis is survived by her five children and their spouses, Russell and Velma Ward of New Port, Minn., Geoffrey "Jeff" Ackerman of Norfolk, Daniel and Cheryl Ackerman of Panama, Candy and Randy Sowell of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Rodney Ackerman of Clarkson; 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law Mary Ward; one brother Arnold and Deloras Fairbairn of Colorado; and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Carroll Young and Marge Fairbairn. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband George Ackerman, her mother-in-law Mary Ackerman Bevins, one son Max Ward, four grandchildren and brothers George, Robert and Virgil.
