Martha only spoke Norwegian until she started first grade.
Later, in June 1917, she was licensed as a teacher herself.
Martha married Harvey Porath on 1 September 1920 at Rice Lake, WI.
They had two sons and two daughters. Daughter Eunice died in 1925 in a farm accident.
They lived in Hiawatha Park on the Red Cedar River in Rice Lake, and in Rockford, IL, and when widowed she moved to Leesburg FL.
Grandma Martha could go to sleep anywhere, anytime, a fantastic skill. She wrote regularly to about 100 people, when writing was pen on paper. Martha was a petite lady with tiny feet, and found it difficult to obtain clothes and shoes for her size.
She loved to save small containers of left-over food, so eating at her place could be an adventure, with weird combinations of items.
Her homes usually seemed to be set deep in a thicket of trees and bushes, which was fun for a kid, and cut down on mowing grass.
She always seemed to encourage her grandkids, and she was not easily rattled.
Even at the end, when she had trouble remembering things, she had a sense of humor about it, and did remember her family.
