He came to California in 1853 as a surveyor. He served in the Civil War when he enlisted as a private at Bear Valley California on 9 Nov 1864, and was mustered into Company H, 7th California Infantry later that same day. He was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona Territory, and promoted to corporal. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at Drum Barracks, California on 1 Mar 1866 (Orton 787). After the Civil War he went back to Iowa because he had relatives living there. He married Mary Ward in 1874 and had three sons and a daughter. They moved back to California before 1900 and settled in the Monterey area.
