Donald Daniel SZYMANSKI, 75, died on October 13, 2011, in Redmond, Washington, of the rare blood disease polycythemia vera. He died peacefully and was surrounded by his family.

A memorial service will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church, in Redmond, WA on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 10 a.m.

Don was born on June 17, 1936, in Chicago to Joseph and Edna Szymanski. He attended Mt. Carmel High School in Chicago and then began his undergraduate education at the University of Illinois (Navy Pier/Chicago) where he played intercollegiate basketball. He finished his education at the University of Illinois (Champaign) where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Don married Sylvia Grzyb on October 12, 1963, in Chicago. Together they raised three daughters in the Chicago area and moved the family to Seattle in August of 1979.

The family enjoyed vacations all over the United States and Europe that included trips to amusement parks, ski resorts and sporting events. Don was an exceptional artist who spent most of his career as a self-employed graphic designer. His colorful oil paintings will be a unique remembrance to his family and friends as they adorn the walls of their homes.

Don was also an athlete until his last days. He especially enjoyed skiing and playing basketball. But what most will remember and admire about Don is his loyalty, sense of humor and encyclopedic knowledge of sports, world history and geography.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Dorothy (Szymanski) Savickas.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years Sylvia of Redmond, WA; brothers Joseph and Norbert of Chicago; his sister Theresa (Szymanski) Morgan of Colorado; his children, daughter Joyce of Seattle, daughter Karen (Szymanski) Eschbach of Kirkland, WA and daughter Mary (Szymanski) Schneider of Kirkland, WA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Benjamin Szymanski and Emma and Evan Eschbach.

Don led a quiet and honorable life and to respect his time here, the family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made in his name to the Art Department at Holy Family Parish School in Kirkland, WA.
