Graveside services for Billy Joe Wakefield, 79, of Arlington and former Grayson county resident, will be 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011 at the Collinsville Cemetery pavilion with Brandon Deever officiating.

Mr. Wakefield was born on March 3, 1932 in Collinsville to Dan Gold Wakefield and Odessa (Graham) Wakefield and passed from this life on Friday, Oct. 21, at the VA Hospital in Dallas. Billy Joe grew up and graduated from the Collinsville High School where he enjoyed playing baseball. Shortly after high school, he joined the Air Force during the Korean conflict. He served four years on active and two years in the reserves. He married Frances Janet (Matlock) on July 1, 1950 in Collinsville.

Billy Joe worked as a data processor for Bell Helicopter retiring after thirty years. He was very active and involved with the Western Heights Church of Christ in Sherman for a number of years, and was a current member of the Pleasant Ridge Church of Christ in Arlington. Billy Joe was an avid outdoors man and loved fly fishing in Colorado. His passion was being with his family, who loved him very much.

Billy Joe was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Frances, on September 28, 2002.

He is survived by his loving family; daughter Carolyn Simmons and husband Royce, and their daughter Carrie Deever, and husband Brandon, and children Josh, Eric, and Ethan; their son Adam Simmons and wife Brooke, and daughter Reese; all of Whitehouse, Texas, their daughter Hayley Hall and husband, Clay of Tyler, TX., daughter Becky Shirley and husband Terry, of Arlington, their daughter Lori Shirley, of Ft. Worth, their son Matt Shirley, of Arlington; a brother Charles Edward Wakefield and wife Dorothy, of Denison, a sister-in-law Evelyn (Cox) Turner of Sherman; and several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 - 7:30 p.m., at Waldo Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society 8900 Carpender Freeway Dallas, Texas 75247.

Services are under the direction of Waldo Funeral Home, located at 619 North Travis St., Sherman.
