MATTOON - Lois Genevieve Adams, 102, of Mattoon died Wednesday (July 3, 2002) in Regency Nursing Residence.

Friends and relatives may gather noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home, Mattoon. Inurnment will be in Hurricane Cemetery, Hutton Township. No flowers please.

Miss Adams was born Oct. 22, 1899, in the old pioneer brick house built by her great-grandfather, John Moore, in Hutton Township, Coles County, the daughter of Elijah Wesley and Nancy Eleanor Moore Adams.

She retained her interest in Hutton Township throughout her long life. She graduated from Hutton Rural School, Eastern Illinois University, Normal, University of Illinois and Teachers College Columbia University, New York.

She retired to Mattoon in 1967 from New York University in Buffalo after 20 years as a professor of home economics. She also taught at Onarga and Mattoon public schools, Fairfield Community High School, Milledgeville, Georgia State College for Women and Ohio State University.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, Hurricane Ladies' Aid, Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Fairfield Women's Club, Kappa Delta Pi, DAR, Coles County Historic Preservation Advisory Council and various educational organizations related to her profession.

Surviving are her brother, J. Fred Adams and wife Evelyn of Springfield; nieces, Dr. Evelyn Othman of St. Louis Park, Minn.; Nancy Adams Griffith and husband Hugh of Plano, Texas; nephew, Charles W. Adams and wife Jean of Springfield.

She was a teacher, author and farmer, having received Coles County 1908 Conservation Farmer Award. Her book, "Hutton Township Coles County Illinois," published in 1996, gives evidence to her sincere interest in the part of Illinois where she was born and reared
