MATTOON -- Hugh Moore Adams, 101, of Minneapolis, Minn., formerly of Mattoon, died 4:20 p.m. Sunday (July 27, 1997) in Ebenezer Luther Hall, Minneapolis.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Cox officiating. Visitation will be one hour before services. Burial will be in Hurricane Cemetery, south of Charleston. Memorials: Mattoon Community School District 2.

Mr. Adams was born in Hutton Township, Coles County, on Sept. 23, 1895, a son of Elijah Wesley and Nancy Moore Adams.

He was a graduate of Eastern Illinois Normal School and in 1922 received a B.S. degree in argiculture education from the University of Illinois. He was an Army veteran of World War I, serving in the 482nd Aero Construction Squadron in France.

He was involved with the Tennessee Valley Authority during the construction of the Fort Loudan Dam. During World War II, he was an assistant for process training at the Atomic Energy Plant at Oak Ridge, Tenn. Mr. Adams taught agriculture and physics in schools in eastern Illinois and served as farm adviser for Shelby County. He owned and operated a farm and following retirement was elected to the Quarterly Court, a governing body for Loudon County, Tenn.

After retiring in Mattoon, he continued his interest in education by serving on education committees and was instrumental in getting character education introduced into Community Unit 2 schools. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion, Veterans of World War I and the Masonic Lodge.

He married Neva Jones on Sept. 7, 1919. She preceded him in death in 1973. He later moved to Mattoon and married Nellie Walker Quigley, formerly of Windsor, who preceded him in death in 1985.

Surviving are his daughter, Dr. Evelyn Othman of Minneapolis; brother, John Fred Adams of Springfield; sister, Lois Adams of Springfield; two grandchildren, Omar and Mark Othman; two great-grandchildren, Leila and Zachary Othman.
