James Vinson Averett married Mary R. Skinner on 1 December 1861 in Muscogee County, Georgia. She is the daughter of Willis Skinner and Eleanor (Humphries) Skinner. She was born January 1836 in Georgia and died 1907 in Fulton County, Georgia.

James and Mary had one child; James Monroe Averett

James enlisted in "Columbus Minute Boys", Company F of Columbus Georgia, 1st Regiment, Alabama or Hilliards Leigon in May 1862.

His wife Mary applied for a Widow's Pension from 1891-1907 in Fulton County, Georgia. In her application she states that the last time she heard from James was 1 December 1863 and that he was in feeble health when his family last heard from him. He never returned home from the Civil War.

Civil War records show that James died 28 January, 1864 in a prision hospital at Camp Nelson, Kentucky.
